Desperado這首歌是我非常非常喜歡的一首歌。惋惜又無奈的唱腔唱出這句：You've been out riding fences for so long now !是有典故的。out riding fences是什麼意思？原來那是牛仔例行的雜事之一，必須要在圍籬外來修築圍籬的一種工作。大概是說：牛仔要騎馬維修牲畜圍籬，有刺的那種。所以，通常牛仔得騎著馬，鞍袋內放著維修工具和材料，在圍籬外騎騎修修維修，叫做outside riding my horse fixing the fences，簡短地說叫：Out riding fences。歌詞將這種情境當成一種隱喻。隱喻為：去做你生活中不是很喜歡的事情，是一種使你脫離人群或關係疏離的那種事。
這首歌發表在1973 年Eagles發行的同名專輯「Desperado」中，這首淺唱低吟，意味十足的歌曲。歌詞據說是在講述關於：十九世紀末美國中西部的亡命之徒(Doolin-Dalton)，像：電影虎豹小霸王之類的感嘆。不過當我把歌詞中不明白的詞組查了一下，還發現另外有文章，值得深究。依我看，Desperado也是一首無奈的情歌。
因為除了out riding fences是隱喻(metaphor)；Queen of Diamonds和Queen of Hearts也是。Queen of Diamonds指a woman that is hard and mercenary(勢利)，Queen of Hearts指a woman that is warm and romantic。歌詞情境中造成一種對比，二種不同的對象，一個是美豔無比一如他的虛榮勢利，一種能真心愛你賢妻良母型。不必拘泥於隱喻對比所指的內容，這是因人而異的，總之是指像中文「魚與熊掌」就是某些不能兼得的特點。
然而，這首歌的歌詞意涵深遠，。如：偉大的劇作或小說一樣，不因時代變遷而退色，反歷千古而易其增光彩，這首歌也是，歌詞情境還蠻能符合現代婚姻的情境呢！不婚、外遇、離婚等也都能擴大解釋。尤其末段，最扣人心弦，令人心軟。

這首叫好叫座的老歌，也是「In America」(2002年)這部電影(我喜歡的電影之一)的片尾曲。這首歌當電影片尾，又可以從劇情中延伸出不同的隱喻。
電影描寫一個愛爾蘭家庭，從美加邊境偷渡到美國，定居在紐約，展開他們新生活的點滴，探討家庭危機、人際關係、移民生活及文化落差等。風格正如同 Desperado 這首歌淺唱低吟的風格，樸素而處處有耐人尋味的情節。In America 在片尾借用Desperado這首歌，將 Desperado 型塑成為象徵艱辛美國移民夢的圖騰，讓聽著這首歌結束的觀眾，有點癱軟倒吸一口氣，留下長長的嘆息和迴盪著淡淡綿密的思緒。

This song tells the story of the infamous Wild West gang, The Dalton Gang. Formed in 1888, the gang consisted mainly of train robbers in what was the Oklahoma Territory and included the Dalton brothers, Bill Doolin, Bittercreek Newcomb and many other famous outlaws. In 1892, after many members of the gang had already been killed, 5 members including 3 of the Dalton brothers were ambushed and killed in Coffeyville. Bill Doolin, Bill Dalton, Bittercreek Newcomb and Charlie Pierce, the last surviving members, recruited 7 more outlaws and formed the Doolin-Dalton Gang to exact revenge on the deaths and continue on with their lives of crime. The song ends here, leaving what happens afterward unknown, but in real life, by 1898, every member had been killed.

One of the jobs of a cowboy is to keep fences in good repair. So he gets on his horse with saddle-bags fulls of hammers and staples and goes riding around fixing the fences, usually barbed wired ones. So 'I have been outside riding my horse fixing the fences' gets contracted to 'Out riding fences"
As a metaphor, it's simply out doing chores nobody particularly likes to do, but it's part of life and it keeps you out on the range away from people and relationships. It's kinda comfortable that way.

Second, let us describe the queen of diamonds. The queen of diamonds is the woman that is glamorous. She is beautiful. She is pretty. She appears on magazine covers. She loves to be surrounded with riches. She loves diamonds. She loves travelling. She loves shopping. She is the woman who is loaded with riches. Men all around the world offer their hard earned money to her so that they can spend their lives with them. Men all around the world want to be seen with this trophy girl. The queen of diamonds is the woman that turns heads. She is the woman that will make the most powerful men kneel before her.
There are a lot of comparisons and references to the queens of the poker deck, especially the queen of hearts and the queen of diamonds. These red headed queens have a lot to do with men and their women. What kind of women does the queen of hearts refer to? What kind of women does the queen of diamonds refer to?
First, let us start with the queen of hearts. The queen of hearts is the woman that will love you no matter what. She will move heaven and earth to make you happy. She is the type of woman who will cook for you in the morning when you wake up. She is the type of woman that will make you supper when you get home from work. She is the type of woman that will take care of your children and raise them the way you would them to be raised. The queen of hearts captivates many hearts of men out there. She is soft spoken, humble, and maternal. She can melt the hearts of many men out there.
So which of the two queens do you want? Which of the two queens do you have? If you are the type of guy that likes the queen of hearts then good for you. If you are the type of guy that likes the queen of diamonds then good for you too. The bottom line is this, which woman will make you happy? Who is the woman in your life that will make you feel like a champion everyday? Is it the queen of hearts or is it the queen of diamonds? Make your choice.
Some men want both the queen of hearts and the queen of diamonds. Some men want pocket queens. Well, pocket queens have been referred to by poker players as four tits. If you are a guy that can handle four tits at once then you must be a very good manager. You would not want to see two queens fighting. You would not want to be black listed among all the queens out there, right? If you are going to go for a queen then you have to make sure what you are getting into. Do not attempt anything silly or else the last laugh will be about you, the joker, who is automatically removed from the deck.
