看似擁有完美人生的金融家Davis(Jake Gyllenhaal飾)，妻子在一起外出的車禍意外中過世，儘管岳父施壓要求振作，他卻發現人生已無法有感受的麻木，生活陷入低潮困境。剛喪妻10分鐘後Davis在醫院因販賣機故障，而給販賣機公司寫投訴信，這引起了客服員Karen (Naomi Watts飾)的注意。Davis從摧毀曾經熟悉的生活，也得到曖昧關係中Karen的傾聽與幫助，重建起人生。
